Because WordPress.com blogs aren’t like self-hosted WordPress blogs in the sense that you can access the web server file directory with a self-hosted blog, verifying your WordPress.com blog with Google Webmaster Tools might not be obvious to a new WP.com or GWT user (or anyone in fact)! I recently discovered how to do this, so I’m sharing my findings with the world!
You can verify your Google Webmasters Tools account with your blog by following these simple steps:
- Head to http://www.google.com/webmasters and login using your Google account.
- Click the ‘Add A Site’ buton and enter your blog URL.
- Now you will be shown a number of ways to verify this is your blog, choose the ‘Alternate Methods’ tab and then choose the ‘Add a meta tag to your site’s home page’ option.
- You will then be shown a meta tag similar to this:
<meta name='google-site-verification' content='dBw5CvburAxi537Rp9qi5uG2174Vb6JwH>– you need to copy the ‘content’ value (the part in bold) from the meta you were shown in Google Webmaster Tools. - Now head to your blog dashboard and go to ‘Tools’ -> ‘Available Tools’ and paste the ‘content’ value you’ve just copied into the ‘Google Webmaster Tools’ field, just under the Webmaster Tools heading.
- Save the changes on the WordPress dashboard that you’ve just made.
- Head back to Google Webmaster Tools and click ‘Verify’, your site should now be verified – if not, wait a few minutes! Any problems, dop a comment below!
Simple as that – although it’s not obvious at first because the option is only available under a hidden submenu.

yes, you’re right. i’ve read the guide in http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/ but the sentence “All of the Webmaster Tools can be accessed via your Dashboard -> Tools page. ” on the page is confusing me at first.
I’ve search the “Dashboard” and there’s no “Tools”
and your post has help me, thanks
Glad you found the guide helpful!
after typing my blog site name (aisteachersblogs.wordpress.com) on the google search box still I cannot see my blog site. I’m done doing the webmaster tools. What else can I do? Thanks
You will need to wait for about 3 weeks before you see your site starting to be listed in the search results.
Very cool! I’ve been struggling with this for awhile, and you just totally solved my problem! Thank, I certainly do appreciate it! Cheers!
No problem, thanks for dropping by!
Do you know of any reason why this wouldn’t work? I have tried several times, and google cannot verify the site.
Hmm, strange. Try hard reloading the Google verification page (Shift F5).
Thank Your So Much
Glad you found it useful!
This method worked well for one of my sites. But with another site it just won’t work. Google keeps saying it can’t verify. Has anyone else had a problem with this method? I’m running out of ideas!
I can’t find the where to paste the code under the available tools page. All I have under available tools page is press this and categories and tags converter. Where can I find the ‘Google Webmaster Tools’ field, just under the Webmaster Tools heading? Your help would be really appreciated! Thanks
Great tutorial !!! Thank you I mean it was right on the money!

A helpful tutorial; thank you! My site seems to have been verified, but Google Webmaster is not displaying any information under ‘Links to your Site’ or ‘Internal Links.’ It says there’s “no data available.” Any ideas as to how to remedy this? Do you know what the ‘preferred domain’ for WordPress.com blogs would be, as discussed here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55281
Many thanks for any help!
Learning as I go! This was very clear and helpful. Now for the patience part! Thanks!
